My wife and I are both from California originally, and we have lived in a number of different states prior to settling in Nevada. Shortly after we arrived our oldest child started school and we really had a desire to settle for a time and let our kids get rooted. I am formally trained in oceanography, and have worked for about 20 years doing weather and climate research. We did not have much understanding of what it means to live as a deaf person or any exposure to Deaf culture prior to the birth of our daughter. So the past 8 years has been this experience of having a whole new dimension of living and experiencing the world open up to us. I am not sure that there is much from our backgrounds that prepared us for this, or for doing the work, but it has been a remarkable experience.
Favorite quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” It’s a cliché, perhaps, but I feel like I keep learning this lesson over and over again.
What do you like about working at NVHV: I like that the outcomes of our work directly impact the lives of the families we touch. Every time I sit down to complete a task for NVHV I feel like the work is helping to make a difference. My professional work is rewarding too, but not in this same tangible way. I also draw on the passion and commitment of all the staff and other board members of NVHV. Seeing that desire among those I met in NVHV to make a difference for families in our community is what convinced me to get involved in the first place. That spirit of the group keeps me motivated.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working: We are outdoors a lot, which is a big part of why we enjoy living in northern Nevada. Camping, hiking and skiing are activities we enjoy when we can get out of the house.
